What should my child bring to school?

Snack & Lunch. Children in all grades at Williams should bring a healthy snack to school every day. Children who elect to bring their own lunch can do as well, keeping in mind that there are not refrigeration or heating facilities available to the children.

Parents can also put money in their child’s lunch account and the child can “buy” lunch whenever he or she wants. For a full description of how the lunch system works, the September menu, and the information for how to pay online, check out the Newton Public Schools elementary lunch website.

Homework & Parent communication folder. Children in all grades at Williams need to bring their folder to school every day. Children bring their homework assignments home in this folder and bring them back to school the next day. This folder also allows for teachers, the school department, and the PTO to communicate with parents. It also allows parents to communicate with teachers.

Outerwear. Each child needs clothing appropriate for the weather. The children go outside most days for recess, even in the winter. If you are dropping off and picking up your child at the front door each day, he or she still needs to be protected from the weather at recess. If the field is snowy, teachers will often allow children in snow pants to “slide” down the hill at the side of the field at recess.

Sneakers for physical education days. Children in all grades at Wiliams attend physical education class twice a week, and need to wear sneakers on those days, as well as clothing that comfortable to wear to run around. At the beginning of each school year, your child’s teacher will provide you with a “specials” schedule that will let you know which day(s) your child has physical education, music, art, and library.
