Newton West Little League – Tryouts for Spring 2012 Season

Greetings from Newton West Little League!

Evaluations for the Spring, 2012 season for players 8-12 years of age were held in October, 2011. IF YOU ATTENDED THESE YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ ANY FURTHER.

However, if you were unable to attend the try-outs held last October a second evaluation will be held for PLAYERS WHO HAVE NOT ALREADY BEEN EVALUATED.

This second evaluation will be held Saturday, January 28, 20011 at the Newton North High School SOA gymnasium.

These evaluations help the league place players in the appropriate levels, and make the teams as fair as possible, so it is important your child attend if he or she would like to play next season!

Who : All players 8 – 12 years old as of April 30, 2012, and 7 year-olds who are in 2nd grade, who DID NOT ATTEND EVALUATIONS IN OCTOBER.
NOTE: If you played in the NWLL Majors in Spring, 2011, you DO NOT have to attend!
When : Saturday Evening, January 28, 2011
Where : Newton North High School SOA Gymnasium
Bring : Glove, sneakers, hat (if you bring a drink please only bring water).

NOTE: Age is player’s age as of April 30, 2012

TIMES:
8yr olds and 7 yr olds who are in second grade — 6:45PM

9yr olds — 7:15PM

10yr olds — 7:45PM

11 and 12 yr olds — 8:15PM

Winter Wear and Sports Gear Sale!

Winter coats, mittens/gloves, scarves, snow suits/pants, snow boots, winter sports gear and more.

We are looking for donations of new or “gently used” winter coats, boots, snow pants/snow suits, hats, gloves and mittens, along with winter sports gear. Please bring merchandise donations to the Williams School Front Office.

Drop off on 3 Consecutive Fridays: Oct. 7, Oct. 14 or October 21.

Sale Date: Friday, October 28th from 2:30-7:30 p.m. at the Williams School.

All proceeds to benefit the Williams School PTO.

Williams PTO Annual Halloween Festival – Friday, October 28, 6:30pm – 8:00pm

Whatever you do this month, do NOT miss the Williams PTO Annual Halloween Festival at Williams on Friday, October 28, 6:30pm – 8:00pm! It is the most exciting family party of the year and we hope to pack the house, once again. Festivities will include:

Bouncy House
Haunted House
Face painting
Musical Chairs
Balloon animals
Lots and lots of games
Even more Prizes
Hot Dogs
Popcorn
Photographs

This event can only work with your help! Each year, we use about 35 volunteers, and while most of them come back every year (because the jobs are so much fun), we still need some more. The slots are only 45 minutes long, and everyone loves the jobs!

Back To School Night!

Back to School Night 2011 has been scheduled for Sept. 22nd from 6-7:30. On Back to School Night, parents can visit their child’s classroom and hear about the curriculum and classroom routines and procedures from their child’s teacher.

Back to School Night is also a chance to hear from the principal, be introduced to the school staff, and learn more about the PTO and volunteer opportunities.

Here is the schedule of events:

• 6:00-6:10 We will all meet in the auditorium for opening remarks.

• 6:10-6:50 Grades 3,4,5 will visit their children’s classrooms (during which time the PTO and Understanding our Differences (UOD) will talk with parents from K, 1, and 2 in the auditorium.)

• 6:50-7:30 Grades K, 1,and 2 will visit their children’s classrooms (and 3, 4, and 5 will meet with PTO and UOD.)

Incoming Kindergarten Family Get-Together (8/6 & 8/22)

The PTO is sponsoring two summer Kindergarten family get-togethers at the Williams School playground (we will meet in back on the playground–not in the school–the school building will not be open).

We have scheduled get-togethers on two dates:

Saturday August 6, 3:30-5:00pm
Monday August 22, 6:00-7:00pm

(Remember, check our Event Calendar regularly to keep on top of upcoming events and activities!)

We will serve Popsicles on both dates.

Williams PTO Spring Meeting

Please plan to join us for the Williams PTO Spring Meeting!
Wednesday morning, June 22, 10:00 a.m., Williams Gym
(to be followed by the Arch Day celebration)

We will be voting on the PTO Slate for the 2011-2012 school year.

Attending the meeting is a sure way to claim a good seat for the Arch Day celebration, when each grade will perform a song or two and be announced by Dr. Connolly as an official member of the next grade.

Wednesday’s Schedule:
10:00 a.m.– PTO Spring Meeting
10:30 a.m. — Arch Day Program
12:00 p.m. — Dismissal!

We still have some 2011 “W” photos available for purchase at $5 each. We will be selling them before and after the Arch Day celebration. Don’t miss the last chance to get your copy of this keepsake picture of the entire Williams School from the 2010-2011 school year!

While you are at school on Wednesday, don’t forget to check the Lost and Found, on the first floor outside the gym and on the second floor in the hallway near the copy machine!! All unclaimed items will be donated to Goodwill at the end of the day on Wednesday!

2011 Williams Library End-of-the-Year Gift Book Sale

Each year, our school library grows when parents underwrite the purchase of new books through our Gift Book dedication program. These tributes offer a great way to honor and show gratitude to a special teacher, administrator or friend while complying with Newton’s No Gift Policy. We will pick a wonderful book from the library wish list to dedicate to your honoree.

When you underwrite a Gift book, your honoree will receive warm greetings on the last day of school. The greetings will tell the honoree:
• The title of the Gift Book
• The name of the underwriter (usually your child’s name or your family name)
• A short message from you that will be included within the dedication
The name of the honoree, the dedication and the name of the underwriter will be inscribed on a bookplate affixed to the book for all to enjoy in the years to come!

We can fill orders for checks received by Wednesday morning, June 15th

To place an order, please:
1. Send a check payable to the Williams PTO for $16.00 per book, in an envelope addressed to “Library Gift Books,” via your child’s folder.
2. Send an email to Carole McElduff (cmcelduff@msn.com) with the following information:
o Your child’s name
o The Recipient of the Dedication
o An optional short personal message that can be included on the bookplate
o Specific book selection criteria. We will do our best to accommodate your wishes within the limits of the wish list. If this is important to you, please order early!
3. Look for the email confirmation of your order that we will send upon receipt of your check.
Additionally we will be selling the gift books during the Book Fair on June 10th

Information for Multicultural Night

Thursday, May 26, 6:00–8:00 p.m.

6:00 p.m.–Families arrive, receive passports, begin to “travel” and dine.

7:15 p.m.–Performances begin in the auditorium; all are welcome.

If you are hosting a country/culture table, you may arrive at 5:30 p.m. to set up. Tables will be in the gym.

If you are bringing food, please bring it to the cafeteria along with appropriate serving spoons/forks and a sign explaining what the food is and what the ingredients are.

If you are performing, please check in at the auditorium by 7:00 p.m. to make sure everything is ready.

We encourage everyone in the Williams Community to join us on Thursday, even if you are not hosting a table or performing. Please consider bringing a favorite dish to share with the community.

There will be brand new Williams t-shirts ($10) and 2011 “W” photos ($5) available for purchase, so bring money or your checkbook if you are interested.

First Grade Art at Wally’s–Last Show Day This Year!

This is the last weekend to see Williams School artists featured at Wally’s Ice Cream! Come see the “Mixed Media Jungles” by first grade artists!

Kathy McGill, Williams Art Teacher, will be at Wally’s on Thursday this week, May 26, after school from about 3:15 – 4:00 p.m. for picture taking and ice cream eating!
