We are excited to launch the 2011 – 2012 Campaign for Williams, our annual fundraising drive to support programs, events, and technology improvements at the Williams Elementary School! The Williams Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) plays a significant role in raising funds needed to support improvements that enhance our kids’ educational experience and build connections among families.

Our Goal

Our goal this year is to raise approximately $42,000 – about $150 per child – in order to provide financial support in four key areas: student enrichment, special events, technology improvements, and school operations, including playground maintenance and upgrade, now the responsibility of the PTO.

Where Does the Money Go?

Last year, 95% of the money raised through the PTO went directly to fund programs and equipment purchases at the school. Specifically, the money was spent on:

• Innovative student programs: This included the Creative Arts and Sciences program that brought over a dozen presentations from historians, artists, and authors to Williams; Understanding Our Differences and The Child Abuse week; field trip subsidies; and funding for teacher instructional software and specialized tools.

• Special events: These included Color Day, Multicultural Night, Arch Day, the annual art show, and teacher/staff appreciation events, to name a few.

• Technology equipment: PTO fundraising enabled the purchase of 13 laptops, 4 digital microscopes (“Proscopes”), and closed the gap so that each classroom now has a modern projection device (“Elmo”). We are getting closer to our goal of having a ratio of 1:3, computers to students.

• Improved School Operations: Funding went to teachers and staff for the purchase of classroom supplies not otherwise available, including financial support of the arts, music, the library and physical education programs. And also for the purchase of technology incidentals to keep current technology in useful operation.

This Year

The PTO plans to continue to support these important programs, services, and needed equipment upgrades that enhance our kids’ education and experience at Williams. We are also committed to fostering a greater sense of community and connection among students, family and faculty, and consider this an important part of our mission.

We look forward to sharing more of our exciting plans for programs and community-building events once the school year is underway. In the meantime, we are asking for your support as we rely on the annual campaign to raise a significant portion of the money needed to fund our programming.

In order to meet these goals, every family is being asked to make a donation of $150 to the Campaign for Williams during the months of September and October. If each and every family donates at this level during the Campaign for Williams, we will raise nearly $30,000 – approximately 70% of our PTO fundraising goal.

We also respectively ask that families consider making larger donations if you are able. Families with more than one child in the school might consider an additional donation of $50 per child. If you are unable to commit at this level, please give what you can. In addition, please consider volunteering your time for any of the valuable and fun PTO programs: everyone can make a difference for our kids and school and it’s a great way to get to know teachers, meet new people and enhance your understanding of the Williams community

All donations are tax deductible. Checks made payable to the Williams PTO can be returned in your child’s folder or mailed to the Williams PTO, 141 Grove Street, Auburndale, MA 02466. Donations can also be made by credit card by using the PayPal link on the Williams PTO website (http://www.williamspto.org/fundraising/paypal/).

We look forward to working together this year to continue to put our funds to work for our kids and our wonderful Williams community.

Sincerely,

JUNE NEWS FROM DR. CONNOLLY:

Dear Williams Community,

It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of another wonderful year at Williams. Although there are still two and a half weeks of school left, this is the last issue of the Word From Williams for this school year, and I would like to take this time to thank all of you for your hard work.

First, I would like to thank the PTO Presidents, Wendy Hurwitz, Katie Greeley, Erin Giesser and Doug Cornelius, for all they have done on behalf of the school and the children.

Second, I would like to thank all of the amazing parent volunteers–it is a tribute to the Williams community that there are too many of you to mention by name or activity. It is your diligent, conscientious work that really does help to make our school such a fabulous place.

Third, I would like to thank the faculty and staff of the Williams School. Throughout the year they have worked tirelessly to educate and care for all of the children at Williams and they have done an incredible job.

Lastly, I want to give my appreciation to your children, the children of Williams School. It has been amazing to watch them grow and develop both academically and socially over this past year. To the fifth graders: Thank you for being such wonderful role models for the other students!

I hope everyone has a wonderful, relaxing summer! I would ask that you please continue to encourage your children to read, write, and do some math over the summer, but most importantly, take a well deserved break!

Thank you, Williams Community, for another fantastic year.

Best,

Dr. Midge Connolly

PROGRAM UPDATES:

Understanding Our Differences:

The Understanding Our Differences (UOD) team is looking for grade coordinators for the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades next year. Grade coordinators help to run the program in their child’s grade. UOD is also looking for 1-2 additional school coordinators to help run the program by attending citywide workshops, booking speakers, sending out emails to parents, or presenting to classes.

If you are interested in helping coordinate the program next year, please contact Ann Hill (annbusbyhill@verizon.net; 617-519-9603).

Understanding Our Differences is a disability and medical condition awareness program started by Newton parents over 30 years ago that is now taught in all Newton Elementary Schools and 200+ schools & organizations nationwide. The programs include a brief lecture; small-group, hands-on activities; and a speaker who lives with the disability or medical condition being presented. This is a great way to volunteer in your child’s classroom and get to know the students and teachers!

Special Education PAC News:

It is hard to believe that we are in the final weeks of the school year. As the year winds down, this seems like the perfect time for reflection. Two years ago, when the three of us decided to volunteer as the Williams School SPED PAC liaisons, we were not sure what to expect or even what was expected of us. While it has been a work in progress, we are pleased with the new events we have brought to Williams and hope you are too! Here is a brief recap.

We kicked off the year with an informal parent coffee. Following this was our second annual celebration of Inclusive Schools Week at Williams. Many things went on throughout the week for our children. All students wrote their thoughts about “what inclusion means to me” on cut out paper hands. These hands were then displayed throughout the school-hands holding hands, united as one. At the All School Meeting that week, students read a book aloud about inclusion. Dr. Connolly lead a discussion about the many ways they all are inclusive throughout the year. She read aloud some of the thoughts from the paper hands and a number of good deeds that our students have done. She went on to explain that these are highlights of some of the ways that as a school community, taken all together, Williams is a very special place.

A highlight for parents that week was the breakfast featuring a panel discussion with top officials from the Newton Public Schools: Joe Russo, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education, Judy Levin Charns, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, Robin Fabiano, Co-Director of Elementary Student Services, and Jody Klein, K-12 Coordinator, English Language Learners. Not only did they discuss how they are working to foster inclusion and academic excellence throughout the school system, but it served as a wonderful opportunity to show off our school and our students. The guests and parents were treated as students from all grade levels came in to share what inclusion means to them. Additionally some 5th graders came and demonstrated and led the adults through what a responsive classroom morning meeting looks like!

In May, we hosted an appreciation breakfast in honor of the teaching assistants, behavior therapists and interns who provide invaluable support to all of our children in the classrooms. Thank you to all the families who donated food for this event and made it so special for this deserving group of people. Throughout the year, we have had a column in the WFW where we try to keep families informed of things happening in our greater Newton community.

We appreciate the support we have received from the Williams community, both the staff and the families. We would especially like to thank Dr. Midge Connolly for all she has done. Dr. Connolly was instrumental in the school’s celebration of Inclusive Schools Week, but more than that, she truly fosters an inclusive environment throughout the entire school year. We look forward to continuing to serve as your Sped Pac liasons next year and wish you all a wonderful, safe and inclusive summer!

Each year, our school library grows when parents underwrite the purchase of new books through our Gift Book dedication program. These tributes offer a great way to honor and show gratitude to a special teacher, administrator or friend while complying with Newton’s No Gift Policy. We will pick a wonderful book from the library wish list to dedicate to your honoree.

When you underwrite a Gift book, your honoree will receive warm greetings on the last day of school. The greetings will tell the honoree:
•	The title of the Gift Book
•	The name of the underwriter (usually your child’s name or your family name)
•	A short message from you that will be included within the dedication
The name of the honoree, the dedication and the name of the underwriter will be inscribed on a bookplate affixed to the book for all to enjoy in the years to come!

We can fill orders for checks received by Wednesday morning, June 15th

To place an order, please:
1.	Send a check payable to the Williams PTO for $16.00 per book, in an envelope addressed to “Library Gift Books,” via your child’s folder.
2.	Send an email to Carole McElduff (cmcelduff@msn.com) with the following information:
o	Your child’s name
o	The Recipient of the Dedication
o	An optional short personal message that can be included on the bookplate
o	Specific book selection criteria. We will do our best to accommodate your wishes within the limits of the wish list. If this is important to you, please order early!
3.	Look for the email confirmation of your order that we will send upon receipt of your check.
Additionally we will be selling the gift books during the Book Fair on June 10th
Thank you for supporting the Williams library!
