Dear Williams Parents,

Please join us in thanking some of our volunteer program coordinators who have worked incredibly hard on behalf of all of our children this year!  Maura Butler and Liz Padula have worked tirelessly to organize all of the Creative Arts and Sciences programming this year; this included programs for every grade as well as programs for the whole school.

Ann Hill and Danielle Hatem worked tirelessly as well to provide the Understanding Our Differences programs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades; from scheduling to training to providing the program content, they did an amazing job.

These jobs require a huge amount of time and effort, and without them, Williams School would not be the same!  Please be sure to thank Maura, Liz, Ann and Danielle when you see them.

Thanks go as well to John Sangiolo and Karl Aghassi, our fearless NewtonSERVES organizers, who were out in the rain on Sunday to beautify Williams!  We would like to thank all of the amazing hard workers in our community who braved the rain to come out and help.

Read-a-thon Begins May 23:
The Williams PTO Read-a-thon begins on Monday, May 23. For two weeks, students are encouraged to record their reading and submit their reading log to see if we can reach our school wide challenge of “Reading Around the World”. Look for material in your child’s folder; information is also available on the PTO website. All students who submit reading logs by June 7 will be eligible for a drawing to win a Scholastic Book of their choice and a box of Scholastic Books for their classroom.

Newton News:

Volunteers are needed to ensure that the graves of all veterans are decorated with flags in time for Memorial Day. Residents can pick up flags at the Office of the Department of Veterans  Services on the first floor of City Hall. You will be given a map of the cemetery with a section to be covered. You do not need to call beforehand, but if you have questions, please contact the Department of Veterans Services at 617-796-1090.

If you are interested in going with a group from Williams on Monday, May 23, after school, contact Dawn Eswara ([email protected]).

Celebration at Norumbega Park Conservation Area:

Particularly in tough economic times, the conservation commission and the City could not do many of the things they would like to do without the help of Newton residents.  We will meet at Norumbega on Saturday, May 28, at 10:00 a.m. to show our appreciation to Tom McKinney, General Manager of the Marriott Hotel and to Mr. Romeo D’Agostino, Newton resident, for their help to maintain Norumba Park conservation area for the public use of all.  The Marriott donated $6,000 to purchase a new bench for our Charles River overlook, and to re-grade a badly eroding path.  Mr. D’Agostino provided materials and labor to completely re-cover the path around the fields with wood chips.  The work and the bench have been needed for some time.   Visitors may park at the Islington Road circle, or on Woodbine Street.  We will meet at the overlook to the Charles, and take a short walk from the overlook to the newly graded path, to the chipped path around the field, then back to the overlook.  Refreshments will be supplied by the Marriott Hotel.
Like ice cream?? Remember to stop by Wally’s and see “Mixed Media Jungles” by first grade artists!  Join Kathy McGill, Williams Art Teacher, at Wally’s on Fridays in May (TODAY!) after school until 4:00 p.m. for picture taking and ice cream eating!

Enjoy the weekend!
