Sunday September 19th from 1:00 to 4:00, the City of Newton continues NewtonStreets, a program to allow residents to explore the City by closing various roadways to cars to promote safe walking, running, biking in various locations throughout the City.
Albemarle Road (the lanes between Watertown and Craft Streets on the Gath Pool side) will be closed to cars and open to bicyclists, pedestrians, inline-skaters. Music, snacks from Whole Foods, and safe biking instruction will be available throughout the afternoon.
The NewtonStreets program began this summer on Lake Avenue near Crystal Lake and will continue next month on Brandeis Road October 3rd 1:00 to 4:00 near Newton South High School. NewtonStreets is sponsored by Bike Newton, the Newton Bicycle/Pedestrian Task Force and the City of Newton Parks and Recreation Department.

Child Assault Prevention
The Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program in Newton is looking for committed and dedicated child advocates to present its personal safety curriculum in local elementary schools.
Join up with current and experienced volunteer Prevention Specialists to teach children to recognize and respond to verbal, physical and sexual assault and abuse. Potential volunteers are community members who believe that children have the right to information, skills and the support of adults. We offer a flexible schedule to volunteers who enjoy teamwork and can make a yearlong commitment of three or four mornings a month. The 3-day training will be held in Newton on Oct. 22, 23 and 24, 8:45-4 p.m.

Join the Cub Scouts! Newton Center Cub Scout Pack 210 is seeking boys in grades 1-5 to join a fun, active and local Cub Scout group over the school year. We have been rock climbing, snow tubing, and raced Pinewood Derby Cars we built. We have had sleepovers at the Museum of Science, in the Pawsox outfield, on a battleship, and in a cabin at a local Scout camp. Pack 210 is also involved with the Newton community. We help to collect food for the underprivileged, clean up the Charles River, and support City ceremonies and celebrations. The monthly time commitment is two one-hour meetings and an optional group activity.
The organizational Pack Meeting is on Thursday September 16, 2010 a 7:00 pm at the First Baptist Church on the corner of Beacon and Centre Streets. Homestead Hayfest Saturday, October 2, noon–5 pm. Join us for our family-friendly outdoor festival in celebration of the Jackson Homestead. Learn through hands-on activities how Newton families lived in the 1800s. Bring the family to Newton Upper Falls Heritage Day, a community block party at Emerson Playground (Pettee St) on Sunday, September 26 from 3:00-6:00pm, featuring live music, children’s activities, face painting and BBQ. NAA Winter Basketball for grades 3 through 12. Register by Oct. 1st: Newton Community Education (NCE) is in partnership with the Newton Athletic Association (NAA), a non-profit volunteer-run organization manages and administers basketball leagues in Newton. Leagues are for players from the third grade through high school. The league is generally considered a boys league but girls are welcome to play. All players welcome regardless of ability or experience. An evaluation clinic is coming up in October to balance the teams. There are 10-12 games on Saturdays and Sundays. Practices one night each week are scheduled by the individual coaches. Program runs Mid-November through Mid-March. Project INTERFACE (PI), an initiative of the Freedman Center at The Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (MSPP), provides mental health resource and referral services for children and families. Its mission is to increase access to mental health and wellness resources within the communities it serves. The Newton Schools have contracted with MSPP/Freedman Center through the Newton Partnership to provide professional, personalized counseling referrals matched for location, specialty and insurance or fee requirements. The Newton community can call the PI HELPLINE at 617-332-3666 x 411, Monday-Friday from 9-5 pm, to consult with a Resource and Referral Counselor. A community web page has also been developed at www.projectinterface.org. This web page includes categorized resources about a wide variety of mental health and wellness topics. In addition, the site lists related upcoming events, such as lectures, training sessions, and out of school time resources.

Tools for Handling Stress with your School-Aged Children – Are you concerned about the stress in your family? Are bed times, getting off to school on time, meal times and getting homework done harder than they should be? The Suzuki School of Newton offers Suzuki Early Beginners classes for children ages 4-5 and an adult caregiver. Get started on Suzuki violin or piano in small groups in a gentle and fun-filled beginners’ class. Choose between Early Beginners’ piano (Tuesdays 1:00-1:45 p.m.) or Early Beginners’ violin (Saturdays 9:15-10:00 a.m.) Classes begin week of Sept. 13th. This is a loosely structured class which creates a smooth transition for the child to enter the SSN core music program. Students are encouraged to attend concerts and classes will perform in school concerts (usually at the end of the 2nd semester.) There are 16 45-minute sessions each semester.
