Bike Newton Rally and Friends & Family Ride
Sunday, May 16 2010 from 12 to 3 pm. We are expecting a big crowd. The Rally meets at the Newton City Hall War Memorial Steps and Circle. There will be a raffle, ice cream, bicycle services, and merchants, a display of projects, speakers, and live entertainment. Our key speaker will be Steve Miller from the Livable Streets Alliance. The group will take a 3.5-mile bike ride through the residential neighborhoods of West Newton. Bike Newton has applied to the League of American Bicyclists for Newton to be designated a Bicycle-Friendly community.
May 17-21, 2010 is Bay State Bike Week (and National Bike Week), and Newtonites will have lots of opportunities to participate right here in the Garden City. Kicking off the week will be the 3rd Annual Bike Newton Rally and Ride on Sunday, May 16, from noon-3pm at Newton City Hall. See here for details. Internationally recognized Clinical Psychologist Catherine Steiner-Adair, Ed.D will present a free parenting workshop Thursday May 13th from 7:30pm to 9pm at the Williams School Auditorium, 141 Grove Street. What Parents of School-Age Children Need to Know About Bullying
A free parenting workshop will be held at Lincoln Eliot Elementary School, 191 Pearl St. 02458 on Tuesday, May 11th from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. NO REGISTRATION IS NEEDED. Meghan McCoy, affiliated with the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State College, will speak about what is and is not bullying, how to recognize if your own child is a bully or being bullied, and how parents should respond if their child becomes involved in a bullying incident. Ms. McCoy has worked with over 80 schools in New England on issues related to bullying and cyberbullying reduction.

Bringing Down the House: June 4-6 at Newton North
Join in a fun-filled retrospective of student and community life at Newton North on June 4-6, before the building closes its doors for the last time. “Bringing Down the House” celebrates the more than 30 years of high school life at Newton North. The weekend features a free Open House from noon-5 p.m. Saturday, with a walk down memory lane on Main Street, memorabilia displays, video and music clips, alumni gatherings, art activities, live music, dining and the Great North Yard Sale. Other festivities include a Theatre Ink retrospective on Friday night, Jubilee concert on Saturday night and Alumni Jazz Brunch on Sunday morning. Times and ticket prices for these events will be announced soon.

24th Annual Newton METCO Community Scholarship Celebration

Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors
The Comedy of Errors, is the 27th Annual performing Shakespeare collaboration between Newton North and South, directed by Dev Luthra. The Comedy of Errors tells the story of two sets of identical twins that were accidentally separated at birth, and the series of wild mishaps that results. ‘Mother’s Day Walk for Peace’ reaches out to Newton with a Visit by its Founder
Stand Up Against Violence – a Great Community Service Event for Families. Every year, thousands of people from across the state gather for the annual 3.6 miles Mother’s Day Walk for Peace. ‘The Walk’, held this year on Sunday May 9th, was started in 1996 by Tina Chery after her 14 year old son, Louis, was killed on his way to a “Youth Against Gang Violence” meeting near his Dorchester home. Tina Chery has since become an outspoken proponent for peace. ‘The Walk’ is one way to show that “people care”. Funds raised from ‘The Walk’ go to The Louis D Brown Peace Institute to educate young people about the importance of peace and to provide crisis management and counseling to Boston families impacted by violence. Calling all Kids to participate in the 5th Annual Pan Mass Challenge
The Newton/Needham/Brookline Bike Ride to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. Sunday May 23rd Noon-4 at 180 Wells Office Park in Newton. Teens age 13 and up can ride in the 17-mile road race, starting promptly at 1:30. (Strong 12 year old 6th graders may participate with the teens at their parent’s discretion). Younger kids ride as long as they want, starting at 1pm, on the office park course. Post-party celebration includes refreshments, music, games, kids’ activities, a raffle with great prizes and more! The minimum fundraising amount per rider is just $50, but additional money raised would be most welcome. May 22nd: 9am-3pm. Bring a Plant/Take a Plant: Ferns creeping out of bounds? Hostas growing like weeds? Lily of the Valley taking over your side yard? May is the month to divide and thin your garden plants. Why put those beautiful Iris divisions in the compost bin? Share them with your Newton neighbors at the 1st Annual Plant Exchange. Now’s the time to save old flower pots, milk cartons, coffee cans, large yoghurt containers, even plastic bags to pot up those divisions. If you can’t dig them up just before the event, keep them moist and in the shade until The Exchange Date: Saturday, May 22nd, 9am-3pm, rain or shine.
