The New Art Center offers February and April Vacation Arts Programs to Children and Teens, as well as 9 weeks of Summer Arts Programs. Our popular Vacation and Summer Programs provide students with the opportunity to try a variety of art mediums and develop new skills in a fun, safe and supportive environment. Children’s Vacation and Summer Arts Programs (gr 1-5) are centered around weekly themes, with classes in Drawing/Painting, Sculpture/3D, Ceramics, and Activities/Drama.  Our Teen Art Programs is designed for students who love art and want to move to the next level.  Classes in Drawing/Painting, Ceramics, and Sculpture/Mixed Media provide exposure to new ways of working with lots of individual attention.

Newton City Hall Holiday Open House

Mayor Cohen welcomes everyone to celebrate the Holidays with your friends and neighbors on Sunday, December 20th from 1:30 – 3:30 at Newton City Hall.

Newton Community Ed classes for Middle Schoolers and Elementary

Registration is now underway for winter classes through Newton Community Education. Coming up for middle schoolers we have Game Design, Fencing, and Karate on Mondays; The Stockmarket Game, Web Design, Manga Heroes, Sewing, Lego Robotics, and Archery on Tuesdays, Web Design again on Wednesdays, and Lego Robotics on Fridays. We offer Babysitting at South on Saturdays as well as over both vacation weeks, and the ever-popular Create a TV Show during April vacation. All of our classes are for kids from all schools.

Coach Education: Coaching the Youth Soccer Player – January 10, 2010
Join the former Director of Coaching from the Irish Football Association and former Northern Ireland U-21 manager, Roy Millar, for a coaching symposium including practical seminars and lectures on how to effectively coach soccer to the youth player. For ages 8 and older. Fence without buying expensive equipment!  Use our safe practice equipment to learn footwork, attack and defense techniques.  Whether you are new or experienced, you will learn new techniques and will get to try out your new swashbuckler skills in duels and sword games each week.  Each class is one in a series of four which can be taken in no particular order to get a good footing in basics and a variety of more advanced techniques.  Each in the series teaches specific advanced techniques not shown in the others and relate their specific advanced techniques to sabre or rapier.  Located at the Newton South Recreation Complex.
3:00 – 4:00:  Special Attacks and Sabre
– This class contains more advanced attack techniques such as redoublement and related lessons in sabre.
4:30 – 5:30: Dodging Techniques and Rapier

Newton Parks and Recreation Camp Fair – February 2, 2010
Join us for our annual camp fair to preview and register for one of our many camps.  Programs are available for children ages 18 months – 21 years old.  Drop in at the City Hall War Memorial between 2:00 – 7:00 PM.

Badminton Tournament for B and C Level Doubles – February 21, 2010
Show your badminton skills in this badminton tournament.  All teams will play a minimum of 2 games. There will be a B Level Men’s Division, Women’s Division and Mixed Doubles Division, as well as a C Level Men’s Division, Women’s Division and Mixed Doubles Division.  Register by February 12, 2010.  Each team member must register.  Please write your partner’s name in the note section or write looking for partner if you don’t have one. 12:30 – 8:30 PM Located at the Newton South Recreation Complex.

American Red Cross Babysitters Training Course – February 28 & March 7, 2010
For ages 11 – 15.  Learn the basics of infant and child care including feeding and changing, accident prevention, emergency response, and how to be a successful babysitter.  All youth will receive a babysitters handbook & Child and Infant CPR certification.  1:00–6:00 PM Located at the Newton South Recreation Complex.

Summer Camp Staff Interviews – March 14, 2010

Recycle Your Old Trash Barrels and Recycling Bins

For $10 per household, old trash barrels and recycling bins will be picked up and recycled (maximum 3 per household), with proceeds going to Christopher’s Haven, an outpatient facility for children undergoing brain cancer treatment at MGH. Leave old trash barrels at the end of your driveway with an envelope taped to the outside, with a $10 check payable to Christopher’s Haven. There are just two more pick-up days scheduled:  Sat. Dec. 5th for Auburndale and West Newton, and Sat. Dec. 12th for Newtonville, Newton Corner and Nonantum.  If you live in these areas, please schedule a pick-up by contacting [email protected] and include your address, village, and number of barrels or bins.

COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE

Proposals Public Hearing & Regular Public Meeting on December 16. The CPC will hold a public hearing for three funding proposals on 16 December 2009 starting at 7 pm in the City Hall Cafeteria (basement). Proposals will be presented for: City Hall Historic Art ($5,200), Museum Collections ($30,000) and Museum Archives – Supplemental (design funds only, amount TBD). The agenda also includes updates from Historic Newton on their capital campaign and ongoing projects with CP funding; and a working session on the current proposal for community housing at 2148 Commonwealth Avenue in Auburndale.
